As an educator at a public university - one founded on the principle of educating the whole people - I intend to practice freely sharing the knowledge, readings, and resources from my speaking engagements and panels (when permitted).

Below you can find a collection of writings, resources, a reading list, and the deck itself from the 2024 CUNY Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) conference.

These have been collected from the many conversations had between the panelists and I and are intended to guide you on your path toward learning.

Panel Abstract

The marketing communications industry has historically lagged behind other business verticals in its inclusion of marginalized people, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and people with disabilities in their workforce. Despite the ongoing studies highlighting these inequities, and the ongoing pledges made by marketing C-suite leaders to rectify these issues, inequities in diversity, equity & inclusion persist.

These problems are not exclusive to the marketing communications industry – these inequities are prevalent across all adjacent business categories, including, but not limited to, the entertainment industry, art, music, fashion, and tech.

Part group therapy and part thought leadership, this session will feature four CUNY CCNY alums – an academic, a psychotherapist, and a content creator & DE&I advocate — all with marketing communications backgrounds – as they share best practices and frameworks to improve worker retention, mental health, and empower marginalized and underrepresented leaders in workplaces and industries that face similarly prevalent challenges.

Panelist Bios:

Javier Garcia, MPS

Assistant Professor, Advertising & Public Relations, Media & Communication Arts Dept. @ CCNY

Javier Garcia is an award-winning advertising executive, educator, and entrepreneur with over a decade of experience across advertising, integrated communications, and academia.

A two-time graduate from the City College of New York (CCNY), Javier graduated from CCNY’s Advertising & Public Relations program in 2009. Javier began his career in Account Management at Young & Rubicam – since merged into VML – working on global brands such as Colgate-Palmolive, LG, and Dell. In the middle of his career, he became a member of the founding cohort of the Branding & Integrated Communications (BIC) program at CCNY, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with his Master of Professional Studies in 2015.

Javier has since served as an integrated communications consultant for major brands like Marriott & Comcast, and taught as an adjunct at colleges across NYC, before assuming the full-time role of tenure-track Assistant Professor at CCNY.
